Sophie Smyth is the Head of Humanities, Social Sciences & MSC at GEMS Metropole School – Al Waha, bringing a strong academic background and a passion for developing globally minded, confident learners. Originally from Liverpool, England, Sophie studied History with Spanish at the University of Liverpool before completing her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in History at Liverpool Hope University.
With experience teaching across a range of Humanities subjects, including History, Geography, and Religious Studies, Sophie is dedicated to creating engaging learning experiences that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. She believes every student should be challenged to overcome obstacles, celebrate success, and develop the confidence to make a positive contribution to their community.
As Head of Humanities, Social Sciences & MSC, Sophie is committed to leading an ambitious and inclusive department where students are encouraged to explore diverse perspectives, understand the world around them, and develop the knowledge and skills needed for success beyond the classroom. She works collaboratively with staff, students, and families to foster a culture of academic excellence and personal growth.
Outside of school, Sophie enjoys going to the gym, reading, travelling, and spending quality time with her family. Her love of exploring different cultures and experiences continues to inspire her approach to education and her commitment to preparing students to become informed, compassionate global citizens.
